I managed to fix this by replacing
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libfreetype.so with a libfreetype.so from
another system, where I had built xorg from source myself. The
difference is drastic:

I'm guessing xorg in Debian is not compiled with the bytecode interpreter?

Still no clue on the GTKv2 font corruption. Qt is NOT affected, so I
can't pin this on a common subsystem such as fontconfig or freetype.
