Using wlan0 solved this:

After updating relevant packages (pcmciautils?) on my sid system with
latest 2.6.14-2 kernel my 16-bit DLink Air DWL- 650 no longer gets
configured.
My existing /etc/network/interfaces is still trying to configure eth0
which worked until this last upgrade. I have had ifplugd installed
for a while and this was working.
ifconfig gives these new entries ( I omitted the irrelevant entries):

I am also studying how to use udev rules to solve this if necessary.
TIA for any ideas,
