1. i changed the "kernel" line in /boot/grub/menu.lst

Now the console blanks, and i can't see any thing on the
screen until gdm comes up.

Pentium M 1.73GHz. with ATI M24 video card.

Did you google for that blank console? That was covered in the list just
a few days ago.
The answer is in what .config has in it in /boot.
If no one else has an immediate solution, attach that.
