In a variety of kernels:
2.6.12-vz3 from:

2.6.15-ck5/6 from:
http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/
They all suffer from an oops in splash_helper at:
BUG at fs/sysfs/dir.c:20
Here is the clincher:
It *only* happens *after* the crontab daily run!
I have written to the maintainer: N/A.
Any fbsplash user out there that has similar experiences?
Happened again today with 2.6.14-ck6.
Those kernels are excellent, so I reverted to life w/o fbsplash.
