You'll have to be a little more specific about the error. I am sending with mutt right now and having no trouble, so it isn't mutt. My suspicion is that you have Thunderbird configured to talk directly to your ISP's SMTP server, but you have not configured your local MTA as a smarthost so that mutt can use it to talk to your ISP's SMTP server. Since mutt does not natively support SMTP (the project is very clear on it being an MUA, not an MUA/MTA like Thunderbird et al.), your local MTA must be properly configured. If you aren't aware of any MTA configuration on your machine, you are probably running the Debian default MTA, exim4.
