Did you try to install the 2.4 kernel? Although some claim otherwise,
the 2.6 kernel installation is impossible (it was last time I tried, a

that 2.6 kernels detect SATA drives as SCSI, and therefore name them
/dev/sdaX. Problem is the installer creates a /etc/fstab with /dev/hdaX
entries for SATAs, hence the filesystem cannot be mounted after reboot

sata disk. In fact it names
the device /dev/sda, but fstab is created correctly, with expert26 as a
parameter for the installer.

Thanx for your replies. I guess my laptop is too new... I tried using
the older 2.4 and 2.6 kernel (and tried expert modes), but the
installer just won't get past through partition step: "no partionable
media found".
There is also no option in my vaio's bios which lets me choose IDE
mode or anything... Seems I have to use winxp as a result..

I wonder how SATA support will be enhanced in linux in the future;
seeing the posts of people having trouble mounting/installing SATA
devices..

Greetings and thanks!

I didn´t realize it was about a laptop, at first. Maybe you wanna consider trying a bit more... its a pity
seeing someone drifting away.
Sata support is definately ok with the kernel. Perhaps the problem lies elsewhere. Did you try to switch consoles during the install, to see what output you get from the installer?
Try doing Ctrl+Atl+ [F1 F2 F3...] to switch consoles.
Sorry I can´t help you further...
