    # apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

    BTW you don't need to upgrade the system to be able to use X.

..try something like #dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 first: it gives you the opportunity to install a driver ( *nv* ) for your nvidia graphics card
