The easy way to check the root filesystem is to boot off another partition,
or these days off a LiveCD like Knoppix. Then it isn't "busy".

It's hardware, almost certainly. Try removing half the RAM and seeing if
the problem goes with the missing memory. If so, you can swap boards until
you find the problem.
You may well find the problem has evaporated, because the problem could have
been a RAM board that wasn't seated perfectly.
BTW, Linux often puts more of a metaphoric "strain" on hardware than
Microsoft's OS.
