So far I've managed to speed up pop processes by adding all my Lan hosts to the /etc/hosts file. This also help internal ssh logins. Also, I found my problem with SMTP response times. Apparently the RBL I was using was slowing down the process. I removed their entries and SMTP requests are now instantaneous.
