to some format.
Support for nef (nikon raw format) will also be appreciated but not strictly
required.

Which ones you tested? The ones I know are xview
(http://packages.debian.org/stable/graphics/xloadimage) and kuickshow.
Can´t say they do a terrific job, but you might want to try.
Afaik, raw format is supported using the dcraw program from Dave Coffin
(http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/). There´s a deb package
(http://packages.debian.org/stable/graphics/dcraw) for that. Its likely
that it will need some hacking to make it work just the way you want,
and together with your viewer.
If everything works ok here, I´m purchasing my slr camera today (one
never knows, when it comes to brazilian bureacuracy...), and I´d like to
keep in contact with other debian users that do photography on a regular
basis.
