On a related note, I'd be interested in a technical explanation of what
'ifconfig XXX up' does, when you don't provide arguments. I need to do
this for my wireless LAN card, in order for 'iwlist scan' to work or to
associate my WLAN card with an ESSID, prior to invoking DHCP via 'ifup
XXX'.
