I have put SARGE (network install) on several different Thinkpads, but never a 
50.
I would first do a Sarge netstall and then try the testing/unstable.
Get the disk partitioned and some sanity checks done.

I have lost the URL, and would like it again, there is a website that has very 
specific instructions for doing thinkpad installs of Debian.
