You are not supoused to edit XF86Config manually as it will break the
md5 of it (see top of file) you should use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
or xserver-xfree86.

Anyway, try to chown root /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and try again.

Also, what error are you getting?
