Are you looking for SATA RAID or IDE RAID?
If IDE is your thing, the undisputed king is 3ware (www.3ware.com).
I've been reading about 3ware controllers on the forums and mailing
lists for the last two or three years now, and I have yet to come across
one negative remark.
If you're looking for SATA, again, 3ware has some nice products. There
is another option though, Areca (www.areca.com). The performance of
these cards are awesome, their features and management options leave you
wanting for nothing. Have a look at this:

I have been bashing my head against the wall thanks to a LSI Megaraid
card that's supposed to be hardware raid but gives me 6MB/s write
performance to a 4 disc RAID-5. If the replacement for this card from
the supplier don't fix the problems, I have arranged with the local
Areca supplier to take my server there and give it a try. Will report
back if it's good.
In the mean time there is a thread on the debian-isp list about that,
and one user gave some useful performance info on the areca card.
