Thank you first, I posted this question on debian-boot mailing list too. and
I think I got the answer:
# make-kpkg --append-to-version=.0901 kernel-image
I use the above command to compile the kernel, then install it.
and I should add --initrd as argument for make-kpkg.

An idea: Did you compile the drivers for the root fs and harddisk as part
of the
kernel (_not_ as modules)?
