Sorry to follow up with added information. The "FIFO stuck" is
actually more widespread than just when trying to mount a usb drive.
It also occurs when I try to print:
When I do:
$ echo "hello" >> /dev/lp0
The command just hangs. In /var/log/debug and in dmesg I get:
teufel kernel: parport0: FIFO is stuck
teufel kernel: parport0: BUSY timeout (1) in compat_write_block_pio
And it occurs when cron runs fetchmail, which in turn runs
amavisd/clamav, which "Can't connect to UNIX socket /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl"
I find in /var/log/syslog, every half hour when I have cron does a
fetchmail for me:

and I get a repeat of these last two lines every 30 seconds until the
cycle repeats itself when fetchmail runs again in half an hour.
Again, the parport_pc and parport modules are loaded and being used.
