Perhaps this is of interest: http://hacks.oreilly.com/pub/h/3124 It all worked here for a while, though their reference to grub.conf should be /boot/grub/menu.lst, and you need to select a patch that matches the kernel you are running. You can change the bootsplash theme using debconf bootsplash. After installing the new ATI 3D drivers, though, it's stopped working.
