If you just want to backport the newer version of Postgres, then read my HOWTO on Debian package customization. http://familiasanchez.net/~roberto/?page=debcustomize The "customization" that you seek is, of course, to recompile for Stable so that you don't have to also upgrade all the dependent packages.
