gdm can do it for X. (You don't need gnome to use gdm.) Try gdmsetup or edit gdm.conf. From /etc/gdm/gdm.conf : [daemon] # Automatic login, if true the first local screen will automatically logged # in as user as set with AutomaticLogin key.
