It's still running there in the background - you're just not looking at it :-) Some graphic cards have a problem with this, evidenced by them displaying a blank screen when you change away from your X session and back again. I solved this by upgrading to X4.2. Before solving it, I just only started X when I needed a GUI, and closed it down when I'd finished.
