The reason I was asking for this because something as simple as
traceroute was missing after the install.

It depends a lot in what are you trying to achieve.
Can you be more specific. I mean mtr is a very good
tool, what kind of integration are you looking for?

Sorry I forgot, you can browse the debian database
with the following command:
#apt-get cache search network
or
#apt-get cache search network tools
and try some of them.
