Any reason this won't work? It's a crust old box (AMD-K6II) and
crusty old sound card(16bit sb), but I don't see why it won't work. I
have yet to ever use the audio recording capability and microphone on
my linux box, so this is uncharted territory for me. Any advice,
software/hardware/programs/commands... would be much appreciated.
I do it similarly, connecting the headphone output of my radio to the 'line-in'
of my sound card (I think line-in is better, but microphone may also work). For
recording, you can use audacity (with GUI control and sound editing
possibilities) or sound-recorder (command-line, good for scripting). You will
also need a mixer app (e. g. tkmix) to set the recording source (line or
microphone) and control the volume).
I did a google search, but didn't find much.

I would suggest "remind" as better choice for scheduling your recording
sessions.
I use it as basis for scheduling my tv recordings.
