A consideration might be the flags supported by the kernel for the cpu. 
AMD cpu's have a few things that, i.e., intel doesn't have, different 
power savings etc. If you do a 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' look at the 'flags' 
entry. I don't know if the same feature from a k7 will work with the 
k8, I would give it a try though.
