I should have stated that, for both Debian and (k)Ubuntu, I was using KDE 3.4. It has been a while since made the move on Debian to Alioth 3.4, so I don't remember what the previous KDE did with USB media notification. I vaguely remember KDE 3.4 as bringing better support for the devices (and I believe the media:/ protocol is KDE 3.4+ only).
