Does anyone know why Linux can't seem to maintain a diald-dialed serial
PPP connection while performing lots of disk I/O, especially on a PIO-mode
IDE disk?

When I ssh in to my machine and do a big "diff -r ..." command, the ssh
connection usually dies and I can't reconnect until the diff is done.

Does the kernel not handle serial port interrupts with higher priority
than disk interrupts to make sure that serial data doesn't overrun
buffers?

Or is something wrong with diald such that it doesn't pass PPP data
through fast enough (or continuously) enough can cause other agents
(kernel network stack?  PPP server?  TCP peer?) to consider the
connection dead?

Or is it something else?  (This is with Debian/Linux woody, kernel
2.4.18, I think.)
