I believe he isn't a part of the "cdrom" group

        sudo adduser ben cdrom

That is if you have sudo setup. If not:

        su - 
        adduser ben cdrom

These assume ben is your user. If that doesn't fix it, maybe the proggy
needs to be run suid. That is another message... to be addressed later.
