Hmmmm.... That's something I've never changed. I am using KMail in Kontact, in a default install (also apt-get upgraded, I think). Just now I looked and found ASCII was first choice 8859 2nd and UTF-8 3rd. I changed so it's ASCII, UTF-8, then 8859. Let's see if that makes a difference.
