It is the job of the dhcp server to assign them IP numbers.
But that doesn't guarantee that a given named machine will get the same
IP each time which is what the OP wanted. On my fairly simple setup
(DSL 4-port router) I use your first suggestion of putting the 4 machine
names into each /etc/hosts. Either the leases work out right or the
router always assigns the same IP to the same RJ45 jack.
