Personally, I prefer to install .deb packages.  However, there is no
telling what sorts of post-install configuration RealPlayer needs.  That
may or may not translate well into a .deb package.

That is one way.  I happen to like stow and find it very handy.  For
external software that I may not update frequently, it works quite well.
Just watch out that Real hasn't hard coded some paths that require it to
be installed in a particular place.
