Dear Kamaraju:
Thank you so much for the clear presentation.
You can always update from sarge to Etch. But you cannot go from Etch to
Sarge.

That's a key point! So it makes sense to install Sarge and then
update to Etch. One last question: Is this update seamless? Can
it be done easily through Synaptic? And when can I update or
when should I update? What has your experience been in the
past?
Thank you.
Benjamin
Please keep replies on the list. That way others who read the archives
will also benefit from the discussion.
Usually the updates between stable releases are seamless. But the
updates between stable to testing or testing to unstable are not
guaranteed. Though not guaranteed, usually you can upgrade without any
problems.
You should upgrade from sarge to etch only when you become confident of
administering a Debian box. If you are running testing, you should be
able to solve any problems you encounter. If you are not confident to do
that, then stick with sarge. If you want to have some excitement and
help Debian maintainers identify bugs, then run testing or unstable.
