This would work, except we live in a small apartment, so she hears the fan and 
sees the cable-modem lights blinking.

I use GNOME, and I know how to make the gmixer app startup when I log in, but 
the point of this exercise is to make that step unnecessary.  My contention is 
that something is not being done at boot to make the mixer "wake up", and I'm 
trying to figure out how to do that.  Starting up gmixer every time I log in 
isn't a huge, horrible problem.  However, I'd like to avoid it if I can.
