Thanks for your help, guys, but I think that I have fixed things. I seem to have got things working by using the backup.1 as the status file. I know that this might leave my system thinking that things are installed when they are not (and vise-versa) but I figure that I can work through the diff and check what's installed and what's not and adjust things accordingly.
