As an alternative, arrange for the list server to reply itself to any
post where the subject line begins with 'unsubscribe' . This reply
email could be a long, carefully crafted document that explains
verbosely how to get off the list. It would not appear on the list,
but would be sent only to the person using the subject line
'unsubscribe'.

I'm uncertain whether or not the 'unsubscribe' post should be
suppressed on the list. It would be nice to never have to see this
junk, but it would suppress the warning flag that improvement in the
list system is needed.  On the other hand, a person who is having
difficulty unsubscribing even after receiving the verbose instruction
letter should be able to ask for help on the list.

Don't respond to this comment with an assertion that people should
just learn to read. Yes, they should.  But they don't all read
proficiently.
