It happened because /etc/network/interfaces didn't require "auto" statements in potato for the interfaces to actually start up. I added auto lo before the exising iface lo inet loopback and all was well. Infuriatingly, I had already sorted this out for eth0 and didn't think to do the same for loopback. Duh. Thanks again!
