According to the ARM part of the debian website (That someone pointed out to me earlier), debian doesn't yet run on the A5000 unfortunately. I'd be tempted to try anyway, if I can work out how. As for backing up first. I thought you migth be interested to know that Risc OS is entirely ROM based and can run with or without a hard disk.
