"XFree86 -configure" will cause X server to load all video driver
modules, probe for available hardware, and write out an initial
XF86Config-4 file based on what was detected. See man XFree86 for more
details. This may do what you want.

I recall this only identified a few specific modes that worked and not
the full Horizsync and VertRefresh ranges my monitor was capable of.
