I have the same hardlinks and I never did this myself. Conclusion must be that the system does it for you. My problem is my root partition still mounts as ext2 even though fstab says ext3. I converted it from ext2. My guess is that /etc/fstab was incorrectly set when I compiled my kernel and mkinitrd ran? -walter
