What colour is the sky in your reality? 'Cause in mine CUPS finds it there just fine. When you configure CUPS it copies PPD you've chosen to /etc/cups/ppd/your_printer_name.ppd. If you replace this file with a custom PPD, CUPS will use that. Yes, it will work. No, it won't show up in any menus -- do you want pretty menus, or do you want a working printer?
