Hi Simon, I installed a text only potato system and went straight to sid to get galeon and evolution. Along the way, I rather carelessly installed X with only the xfonts-base and 100 and 75 dpi fonts. So Freetype was completely missing. Your unix 7100 entry made me think I'd missed something pretty fundamental along the way and I had. X was not using XFS. I didn't have xfstt installed. the combination means that I was basically not using the fonts that were on the disk. thanks for taking the time.
