Oh yes!  fetchnews can only be run as root or as user news  - you
can't  run it as a user and shouldn't  change permissions to do so.

as root try

fetchnews -vvvv > fn.txt   (yes four v's!!  Let's get verbose ;-)

and post up fn.txt
