First of all: check out the "df" command. Then check out "mount". Both have manpages which should be on every newbie's reading list.
Chances are, yes, /tmp is a separate partition, but it's easy to see for yourself. Meanwhile, I don't use xcdroast much but can't it be configured to extract to someplace other than /tmp?
