has always been a sufficient reference for me;  books always seemed like
a bit of a waste of money.  The spec is not a good way to learn the
basics of html, but if you can put together a basic page already then I
don't see the need for a book.

My opinion is that books which teach you how to get particular visual
effects in HTML are inherently evil;  HTML was never intended for visual
effects.

I could rant for a long time on this topic, but it was all done very
comprehensively in a thread a couple of months age; 'web standards' was
the subject, I think.
