The standard kernel with debian 3 is version 2.2, but there is also a 'kernel flavour' available based on version 2.4. See http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes/ch-whats-new.en.html#s-newinst for further information.
Also, the kernel sources for version 2.4 are available as a package, so you could compile your own kernel with the proper hardware support after doing a basic installation on your 10G disk. See http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/reference.en.html for information on Debian and how to compile your own kernel. Both docs are also available in German.
