Thanks to dman and others on this mailing list, I have managed to get CUPS running on my "main" machine. It works beautifully, and now I would like to get this printer on my LAN so I can use it from other machines. I have been trying to get this working for the past week or so, without too much results, and am out of ideas. So far, I have tried to get it running on only a single "remote" machine. Both are running Debian "testing" with KDE 2.2.2 from Sid. Both have identical installs of the various CUPS packages needed including the necessary KDE packages.

On the "working" machine (gandalf) I can bring up the "localhost:631" screens and access the various menus fine. The KDE CUPS config tool also works great. I have read and re-read all the help topics and have even tried to implement some of the config options in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file. My printer (a HP 960c) configs fine with the HP-900 series ppd + gimprint.

On the single 'remote' machine (legolas) I can "see" the printer on gandalf, but when I try to print the test page, it will show up as a job on the remote machine and says the file has been sucessfully sent to the server, but it never shows up as a job on the server machine (gandalf).

Inspecting the error logs on both machine doesn't reveal anything, and the server machine shows an appropriate entry for access from the remote machine. The only other thing that seems strange is that I cannot access the server via the LAN from the remote machine... I get a acess denied error. All of this makes me suspect a "permissions" problem, probably on the server side, but I have tried all of the obvious combinations for permissions that I can think of in the servers's cupsd.conf file to no avail.

At this point, I am afraid I have mucked-up the server's cupsd.conf file too much and have introduced many things which I cannot "back-out" because I've forgotten all my "edits". My only recourse that I can come up with at the moment is to purge and re-install to get back to the original settings. But this puts me back at my starting point without any insight... perfect for making the same mistakes!

So would someone be so kind as to either point me towards a step-by-step HOWTO on setting up CUPS for network printing, OR provide me with a few pointers? Before I reinstall the "default" config, I would really like to know if network printing worked "out-of-the box" for someone, or did they have to add some extra things to the default config supplied with the debs? I would REALLY like to try an "organized" flailing this time <g>.

After I get this one "licked" I plan to tackle printing via Samba, but not just yet.

TIA & Cheers,
-Don Spoon-
