I could have sworn this discussing was just taking place 12 hours ago...
I'm guessing it was a different originator though. :)

My suggestion is to set up gdm/kdm to allow shutting down from the
display manager. That way when your son is done using gnome/kde, he can
log out and shut down from there. There were other suggestions floating
around about messing with various security settings, etc that, to be
perfectly honest, I didn't pay much attention to. :)
