Also make sure that the last item in your .xsession isn't backgrounded. It may be that X is running perfectly, but exits when there's nothing keeping it alive in the script.
Two popular choices are to end with either your window manager or a terminal. Is there a .xsession-errors in your home dir? That will tell you if something funny happened during you session. Again, if everything exits normally and X is simply logging out, there might not be anything there.
