Yes, but there are also a few hooks. Ever tried 'grep sort muttrc' ? :)
'grep sort' from the attached muttrc:
> set sort=threads
> set sort_aux=date
> folder-hook . 'set sort=date index_format="%4C %Z %{%b%d} %-15.15F (%4c) %s"'
Now this hook quite effectively cancels the previous sort=threads...
Be careful out there :-P
