Sounds more like AOL.com, which I affectionately call "A-hOLe
dot COMmie. They are trying to do the same thing to me, after I canceled
the year of free service with them that came with my computer after two
weeks. So I closed the account anticipating just the sort of problems
you had with EL
I plan to form my own tiny ISP, for myself and my friends, just
to get away from this kind of garbage.
