If you _have_ to have `apropos` why not just alias `man -k` to `apropos`
in your shell's rc?

I missed the rest of the thread, but on my woody setup apropos is just
skippy:

(~)% apropos apropos
apropos (1)          - search the manual page names and descriptions
(~)%
