Why in back ground.  APT system run by dselect asks question unless you
set "debconf" to assume yes to all etc.  This is dangerous.  You may
change the level of question by using:

# dpkg-reconfigure --priority=medium debconf

for example.

You have vertual terminals so you run dselect on one screen and move on
in another screen.  If you are on remote terminal such as VT-100
emulators (putty on window for ssh), you can use program like screen to
have multi-screen.  Check it out by "apt-get install screen" :)
